Inline Editing for Related List in Salesforce

Read Time:2 Minute, 19 Second

Inline editing is a productivity enabler for Salesforce users. It helps the users stay in context while editing records lightning fast. However, it is only available on record-detail components and list views. Its absence on the record-related list significantly impacts the user experience and productivity. This means more time to complete the task, resulting in many clicks and navigation. And you are not alone. This is the one of the highly voted ideas (5001+ votes, 49850+ points) in the Salesforce IdeaExchange

Business Problem

Each Salesforce user in each department has unique scenarios to review and manage related list records. Let us look at some examples to understand the problem.

  • The Customer Success Manager reviews all open cases and pipeline opportunities of a key client. He also wants to adjust the Close date of a few Open Opportunities and priority of Open Cases. Without inline editing, he must click and navigate many times to get this done.
  • A Project Manager reviews all outstanding tasks of a Project with his team. Based on team feedback, he wants to update the status and due date in bulk. With the current Salesforce limitations, he must open each task record to update the values.
  • An Accounting team user reviews all open Accounts Payable by vendor account. During the review, the accounting user wants to update the status and date of the payment. Currently, it is a time-consuming process without bulk inline editing on related list records.
